Key takeaways

  • Hyderabad now has one of India's top three UI/UX hiring markets — behind Bengaluru and roughly level with the NCR — driven mostly by GCCs, product companies and a growing fintech/healthtech ecosystem.
  • Six industries do most of the design hiring here: financial services and fintech, healthcare and healthtech, SaaS and enterprise software, e-commerce and consumer tech, mobility and logistics, and government and public-sector digital initiatives.
  • Each industry hires a slightly different profile — a fintech designer needs regulatory literacy, a healthtech designer needs safety-critical thinking, a SaaS designer needs systems fluency. Positioning your portfolio for the right industry matters more than adding more projects.
  • Salary bands overlap heavily across industries at the same experience level; the bigger driver is company type (GCC vs Indian product company vs services) and portfolio quality, not sector.
  • The single biggest career mistake we see: applying broadly across all industries with a generic portfolio. Focused portfolios get 3-4x the interview rate.

Why Hyderabad is a serious UI/UX hiring market

Five years ago, most Indian design career conversations started and ended with Bengaluru. That is no longer true. Hyderabad has quietly become one of India's top three UI/UX hiring markets — behind Bengaluru, roughly level with the NCR, and ahead of Mumbai and Pune on design-team volume.

Three forces drove this: the GCC boom (global companies opening or expanding their India development centres, most heavily in Hitech City and Financial District), a growing crop of Indian product companies headquartered here, and the state government's active tech policy that has kept the corridor between Madhapur and Gachibowli one of India's fastest-growing enterprise clusters.

What that means for a designer: the demand is bigger than it looks and spread across a wider set of industries than most cities. Here is the honest picture of who is hiring, what they hire for, and how to think about each.

1. Financial services and fintech

Hyderabad houses the India-facing tech teams for JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, State Street, Goldman Sachs, Franklin Templeton, ICICI Bank, HDFC and many others. Add Indian fintech companies with sizeable Hyderabad teams — PayU, PhonePe, Razorpay, Cred, Groww — and this is one of the largest single design-hiring sectors in the city.

What they hire for: product designers with a strong grasp of trust, security, error states, and edge cases. Financial products are unforgiving — the happy path is 30% of a designer's job, and the other 70% is what happens when the payment fails, the KYC document is unreadable, or the user changes their mind mid-transaction.

What they will ask in the interview: "Walk me through how you would design an OTP entry flow for someone on a low-bandwidth Android phone. What breaks? What have you seen fail in the wild?"

How to position yourself: if you have any prior work with banking, payments, KYC, insurance, or accounting software — feature it. If you don't, build one case study around redesigning a real fintech product's edge case. Better than three generic screens.

2. Healthcare and healthtech

Hyderabad is home to Optum, Novartis and Merck's tech teams, and a growing set of Indian healthtech companies — Practo, PharmEasy, Cloudnine, and hospital-network tech divisions. The city's proximity to Genome Valley and its healthcare-innovation ecosystem has kept this a steady hiring sector.

What they hire for: designers who understand safety-critical work — clinician workflows, patient-facing apps, or health-record systems where a mistake carries real weight. Empathy for non-technical users (patients, older adults, health workers in remote areas) is prized.

What they will ask in the interview: "How would you design for a rural ASHA worker with intermittent connectivity, low digital literacy, and a 3-inch screen?"

How to position yourself: healthcare accepts researchers strongly — if your background is teaching, social work, nursing, or any human-services field, your ability to run good research with vulnerable users is unusually valuable. Feature it.

3. Enterprise SaaS and B2B software

This is where a lot of the highest-paying senior design roles in Hyderabad quietly sit. Salesforce runs a large India centre here. ServiceNow, Adobe, Autodesk, VMware, IBM, Oracle and Cisco all have design teams here. Indian SaaS companies — Freshworks, Darwinbox, Zluri, Kissflow, WebEngage — are hiring product designers actively.

What they hire for: designers who can hold complexity in their head. Enterprise software has data-dense screens, admin panels, multi-role permissions, integration flows and settings pages — none of which are inherently sexy but all of which need thoughtful design.

What they will ask in the interview: "Show me a complex screen from your portfolio and walk me through every decision — including what you left out and why."

How to position yourself: if you enjoy the plumbing of design — systems, tokens, spec handoff, developer collaboration — this is your industry. Career switchers from software engineering do unusually well here because they already speak the language.

4. E-commerce and consumer tech

Amazon runs one of its largest global engineering teams from Hyderabad — the single biggest e-commerce design employer in the city. Add Flipkart, Meesho, Nykaa, Myntra, Zepto, Swiggy, Zomato — all with Hyderabad presence — and consumer product design has a large hiring surface.

What they hire for: designers who think in funnels, conversions and edge cases at massive scale. What works at 1,000 users breaks at 10 million. What increases add-to-cart by 3% is worth more than what wins a design award.

What they will ask in the interview: "Here is a checkout flow with a 38% drop-off at OTP entry. Diagnose it and propose three tests, ranked by expected impact."

How to position yourself: e-commerce hiring loves designers who can talk about metrics honestly. Feature a case study where you measured something, learned something, and iterated — even if the outcome wasn't dramatic. Better than five case studies with no evidence they were tested.

5. Mobility, logistics and enterprise services

Uber has a large Hyderabad design team. Ola, Rapido, Delhivery, Shiprocket and mobility startups round out this cluster. Enterprise services companies — Accenture, Deloitte Digital, Capgemini, Cognizant Digital — also hire designers steadily.

What they hire for: designers comfortable with operational complexity — flows involving multiple parties (rider, driver, dispatcher, warehouse) and real-time state. This is systems design meeting service design.

What they will ask in the interview: "Design the dispatcher screen for a delivery hub handling 200 riders during a 90-minute Sunday-evening peak. What information does the dispatcher need? What can wait?"

How to position yourself: case studies that show more than one user type in a single flow. Bonus if you can show a shipped or ship-ready design that considered operational realities, not just the consumer's happy path.

6. Government and public-sector digital initiatives

The smallest of these six, but real and often overlooked. Telangana's IT department has been active on digital public services (T-Wallet, T-App-Folio, Meeseva integrations). Central initiatives (DigiLocker, ONDC, UPI, Aadhaar-adjacent projects) have contractor and product-team hiring, some India-remote and Hyderabad-based.

What they hire for: designers who can work with regulatory constraints, low-bandwidth reality, and users across dramatic literacy and language gaps. Multilingual UI is non-negotiable.

What they will ask in the interview: "How would you design an income-certificate application flow that works for a first-time smartphone user in a Telugu-medium village?"

How to position yourself: honest work at scale, tested with the target population, in a regional language, will stand out unusually strongly. Fewer designers pursue this, and the ones who do are memorable.

Cross-cutting: what all six industries have in common

Three things, based on what Hyderabad hiring managers tell us they wish more candidates had:

  1. Domain-specific portfolio pieces, not generic ones. Ten generic app redesigns lose to three case studies that show industry understanding.
  2. The ability to defend decisions under pressure. Every serious interview will point at a screen and ask "why?" — not to trap you, but to see how you reason. Practising this out loud, with a mentor, is the single highest-leverage interview prep any designer can do.
  3. Evidence of testing. Even one usability test with five real users on one case study puts you ahead of most portfolios. Two puts you in the top 20%.

Salary reality across industries (2026, Hyderabad)

The bands overlap enormously — sector matters less than most people think, and company type + portfolio quality matter more. Directional ranges, from actual local hiring conversations:

  • Entry-level UI/UX Designer (0-1 yr, portfolio-backed): 4-7 LPA — near-identical across industries
  • UI/UX Designer (1-3 yrs): 7-14 LPA — SaaS and fintech creep upward within this band
  • Senior / Product Designer (3-5 yrs): 14-24 LPA — bigger sector spread starts here; enterprise SaaS at the top
  • Lead / Staff Designer (5+ yrs): 24-40 LPA — GCC premium becomes visible
  • Design Manager / Head: 40-70 LPA+ — SaaS and fintech dominate the high end

These are not audited numbers — we don't have that data — but they reflect the reported ranges in conversations with hiring managers, recruiters and recently-placed designers in Hyderabad over the past several quarters.

The mistake most career switchers make

Applying broadly across all six industries with the same portfolio. It feels safer — more shots on goal — but the interview-invite rate is much lower than the equivalent time spent narrowing a portfolio around two industries.

Pick two adjacent industries where you can plausibly claim domain understanding. Build (or refine) portfolio pieces for each. Apply narrowly, refer strongly, and reject the temptation to spray applications. Focused portfolios get roughly 3-4x the interview rate we see for generic ones.

Frequently asked questions

Which industry pays UI/UX designers the most in Hyderabad?
At entry level (0-2 years) there is less than 2 LPA difference across industries — companies dominate. At mid-senior levels (5+ years) the highest bands are typically in enterprise SaaS and fintech, followed by healthcare software and product-led e-commerce. GCC teams tend to pay a premium over Indian product companies at the same seniority, but with different work culture.
I have no domain experience. Should I pick an industry before applying?
Yes, at least loosely. A designer with 3 well-argued fintech case studies will win a fintech role over a designer with 10 generic screens. If you don't have a domain yet, pick one you can genuinely be curious about — read its user research, understand its constraints, and build one or two case studies around it.
Are there Hyderabad-based startups hiring designers, or is it mostly GCCs?
Both, in real numbers. GCCs make up the largest volume — Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, Wells Fargo, State Street, JPMorgan, and hundreds of others. But independent Indian product companies — Darwinbox, Skit, Ozonetel, Zluri, Turing — hire designers quarterly. The startup layer around Madhapur, Jubilee Hills and Hitech City is smaller but active.
Which sector should a career switcher from IT services target?
Whichever adjacent sector uses your existing domain knowledge. TCS engineer who worked on a banking client? Target fintech design. Wipro tester on healthcare systems? Target healthtech. Infosys developer on retail projects? Target e-commerce design. Your domain fluency is the single strongest thing you bring to a design interview panel.
Do these industries hire only in Hitech City / Gachibowli, or across Hyderabad?
Physical offices for most GCCs and mid-to-large product companies are concentrated in the western belt — Madhapur, Hitech City, Gachibowli, Financial District. But hybrid and fully-remote roles at these companies mean a designer living in Ameerpet, SR Nagar, Kukatpally or Dilsukhnagar can absolutely work for them. Commute is worth planning around: 30-50 minutes at peak is common from central Hyderabad to Hitech City.
