UI/UX Design Certification: The Complete Guide (2026)

Certificates vs certifications, what employers check, exam formats, levels, costs, validity and verification — and how to choose a UX certification that helps your career.

By Agile Design School Editorial · Updated 1 October 2026 · 8 min read · Complete guide

Key takeaways

  • A certificate says you attended; a certification says you passed an independent exam against a published standard.
  • Employers hire from portfolios — a certification helps most for shortlisting and career switches.
  • Judge any certification by its published blueprint, real assessment, verification and renewal.
  • ADS Certified has four exam-earned levels plus three intensive tracks, with an exam-only path at every level.

What is a UI/UX design certification?

“Certification” is used for three very different things, and the difference matters to employers:

  • Certificate of completion — proof you finished a course. Useful, but it says nothing about how well you can design.
  • Assessed course certificate — given only after your work is assessed, for example by a portfolio jury.
  • Exam-based professional certification — an independent exam scored against a published standard, valid for a fixed period and verifiable by anyone.

This guide explains how to tell them apart, what they cost, and how to choose one that actually helps your career.

Do UX certifications matter to employers?

Honestly: your portfolio comes first. Hiring managers decide from your case studies and how you explain your decisions. A certification helps in three situations:

  • Getting shortlisted when recruiters screen many CVs and need a quick, verifiable signal.
  • Switching careers, when you have no design job history yet to point to.
  • Proving a specialism — usability, research or design systems — beyond your job title.

A certification only carries weight if an employer can check it in seconds and knows what it measured. That is why verification and a published standard matter more than the name on the certificate.

How to judge any UI/UX certification

Before you pay for any certification, check these seven things:

  1. Published blueprint — the exam domains and their weights are public.
  2. Real assessment — timed and proctored, ideally with a practical or portfolio component, not just multiple choice.
  3. Independence — passing depends on a rubric, not on the teacher who taught you.
  4. Public verification — every credential has an ID an employer can look up.
  5. Validity and renewal — the credential expires and is renewed, so it reflects current skill.
  6. Transparent cost — programme, exam, retake and renewal fees are published, with GST stated.
  7. An exam-only path — experienced designers can prove competence without re-taking a course.

The ADS Certified ladder: four levels

ADS Certified is Agile Design School's exam-based credential. There are four levels; each one requires the level below, and each is earned only by passing the exam — the 20-week preparation programme helps you prepare but does not certify you.

LevelWho it is forEntry gateExamProgramme fee (incl. 2 attempts)Exam-only fee
Design Associate (ADS-CDA)Learners and early-career designersOpen entry90-minute timed online exam, 70 questions, negative marking₹75,000₹15,000
UX/UI Practitioner (ADS-CUP)Working designers with shipped projectsValid ADS-CDA2.5-hour exam with a live human proctor₹1,10,000₹22,000
Design Specialist (ADS-CDS)Senior craftspeopleValid ADS-CUP3-hour live practical in Figma, under observation₹1,50,000₹30,000
Design Master (ADS-CDM)Design leadersValid ADS-CDS + 1–3 years of documented practiceCapstone defended for 60 minutes before an external panel₹2,00,000₹40,000

All fees include 18% GST. Each level's page publishes the full exam blueprint — the domains and their exact weights.

Intensive certification tracks for professionals

For people already working who need one specific competence certified quickly, three intensive tracks combine live teaching with a proctored exam:

TrackFormatEntryFee (incl. 2 attempts)Exam-only fee
Usability Engineering (ADS-UE)10 days · 80 hoursNo prerequisite₹1,35,700₹27,140
Experience Strategy (ADS-XS)10 days · 80 hoursADS-UE or 3+ years’ experience₹2,02,960₹40,120
Behavioural Design (ADS-BD)5 days · 40 hoursNo prerequisite₹1,03,840₹20,650

Each track awards an ADS Certified credential with the same 3-year validity and public verification as the four-level ladder. Modules can also be booked individually.

Exam formats explained

  • Timed online exam (CDA) — multiple-choice and scenario questions with negative marking, so guessing costs marks. Closed-book and browser-locked.
  • Proctored exam (CUP and the intensive tracks) — supervised live; the Usability Engineering exam also includes a timed heuristic evaluation of a live product.
  • Live practical (CDS) — three hours building to a specification in Figma while examiners observe.
  • Jury defence (CDM) — a substantial real-world capstone, defended for 60 minutes before senior design leaders from industry.

Pass thresholds are shared with registered candidates before the exam, and every question maps to a published blueprint domain.

How much does UX certification cost in India?

Compare the total cost — preparation, exam, retakes and renewal — not just the headline price. For ADS Certified:

  • Programme path: ₹75,000 to ₹2,00,000 depending on the level, including two exam attempts usable within 12 months.
  • Exam-only path: ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per attempt, for experienced designers.
  • Retakes: after the two included attempts, you pay only the exam fee — never the programme fee again.
  • Renewal: after 3 years, a shorter recertification exam (half the exam fee, as stated on each level's page).

EMI is available on programme fees, and GST invoices are issued for employer-sponsored candidates. See every figure on the fees page.

Programme path or exam-only path?

Choose the programme if you are learning the material for the first time or want structured preparation: the 20-week programme runs a diagnostic, live studios across every blueprint domain, exam-condition drills and two full mock exams before you book your attempt.

Choose exam-only if you already do the work every day. The credential certifies competence, not attendance — both paths carry equal standing on the verification record.

Validity, renewal and verification

Every ADS Certified credential is valid for three years and carries a public ID (for example, ADS-CDA #00214). Employers can confirm the holder's name, level, pass date and validity on our verification page; bulk checks for shortlists are free. Add the ID and digital badge to your CV and LinkedIn profile so recruiters can check it in one click.

Certification plus portfolio: the winning combination

A certification gets you noticed; your portfolio gets you hired. The strongest candidates show both: a verifiable credential for the screening stage, and 3–5 real-user case studies for the interview. If you are starting from zero, build the portfolio first with a career course such as the Professional Certificate in UX/UI Design — read the UI UX design course guide — then certify.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a UX certificate and a UX certification?
A certificate shows you completed a course. A certification shows you passed an independent, timed or practical exam scored against a published standard, and it can be verified by employers.
Is UX certification worth it in India?
It helps most when you are switching careers or need a verifiable signal for shortlisting. It does not replace a portfolio — employers hire from case studies — but a verifiable credential strengthens your CV.
Can I get UX certified without taking a course?
Yes. ADS Certified offers an exam-only path at every level, from ₹15,000 per attempt. Higher levels require the previous level.
How much does a UI/UX certification cost?
For ADS Certified, the preparation programme costs ₹75,000 to ₹2,00,000 depending on the level, including two exam attempts; the exam-only path costs ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per attempt. All fees include 18% GST.
How long is a UX certification valid?
ADS Certified credentials are valid for three years, renewed by a shorter recertification exam.
Which UX certification is best for beginners?
Start with a level that has open entry and tests foundations — at ADS that is the Design Associate (ADS-CDA). If you have no design experience at all, a career course with a portfolio is usually the better first step.
How do employers verify an ADS Certified credential?
Every credential has a public ID. Employers enter it on the verification page to confirm the holder, level, pass date and validity; bulk verification is free.
What happens if I fail the exam?
The programme fee includes two attempts within 12 months. After that, each further attempt costs only the exam fee — you never repay the programme.
