Designing for AR/VR — 10-Day Weekend Workshop

Take your interface skills off the flat screen. Design, prototype and test a real AR or VR experience — spatial layout, gaze and gesture input, comfort and accessibility — in a professionals-only cohort of 15 across five weekends.

Workshop at a glance

  • Format: 10 days across 5 weekends (Sat & Sun) — live, hands-on studio sessions, never passive lectures
  • Cohort: strictly 15 professionals — small enough that every person's work is critiqued every weekend
  • Next start: upcoming Saturdays
  • Fee: ₹15,000 · GST invoice for employer sponsorship · Scholarship Test discounts apply

How the 10 days run

Weekend by weekend

Every weekend follows the studio rhythm: teach → build → critique. You work on a real project throughout — yours or a live brief — so learning compounds instead of evaporating.

Weekend 1 · The spatial landscape

AR, VR and mixed reality compared; what changes when the screen disappears; teardown of shipped headset and phone-AR experiences; pick your project brief.

Weekend 2 · Space, depth & layout

Field of view, comfortable viewing distances, depth cues, world-locked vs body-locked UI, and reading text in 3D.

Weekend 3 · Input & feedback

Gaze, hand tracking, controllers and voice; direct vs indirect manipulation; audio and haptic feedback that confirms without overwhelming.

Weekend 4 · Prototype & test

Build a working prototype in current no-code and low-code spatial tools, then test it with real users — measuring comfort and simulator sickness, not just task success.

Weekend 5 · Accessibility & defence

Seated and one-handed play, motion sensitivity, captions and spatial audio; iterate on evidence and present your experience to the cohort and a reviewer.

What you'll learn

Skills you'll actually use on Monday

  • Spatial layout, depth and legibility in 3D
  • Designing for gaze, hand, controller and voice input
  • Comfort: locomotion, motion sickness and session length
  • Prototyping and testing immersive experiences with real users
  • Accessibility for headset and phone-based AR

What you'll leave with

Artifacts, not just notes

  • A designed AR or VR experience — spatial flows, states and edge cases
  • A tested prototype with comfort and usability findings
  • A spatial-UI checklist you can reuse at work

Who should attend

  • UX and product designers moving into immersive work
  • Game, 3D and motion designers who want UX rigour
  • PMs and engineers specifying AR/VR features

Why only 15 seats

Small on purpose

Fifteen is the largest cohort where every participant's work can be critiqued live, every weekend, by the facilitator and peers. Bigger rooms turn workshops into webinars — and webinars don't change how you work.

Weekends only, because this is built for working professionals: no leave applications, no career pause — just ten deliberate days that compound.

What you need

  • A laptop with Figma (free plan is fine)
  • A smartphone that supports AR — most phones from the last few years do
  • No coding, no 3D modelling and no headset required

Workshop FAQ

Straight answers

Do I need a headset?
No. You can design and test phone-based AR with the smartphone you already have, and complete the whole workshop that way. If you have access to a headset, you can test on it as well.
Do I need to code or know 3D software?
No. Prototyping uses no-code and low-code spatial tools. Some familiarity with Figma or a similar tool helps.
Which tools do we use?
Current spatial prototyping tools alongside Figma. The principles are taught to outlive any single tool or device.
Will this help me at work immediately?
That is the design: you leave with a tested prototype and a checklist you can apply to the next immersive brief.
